Derek pmo at first, and I do think his character was a bit cheated. That being said, if he truly saw Odette as just a pretty face he’d never hold out hope she was alive or spend so much effort trying to find her. He messed up, and he spent the rest of the movie making up for it

I think the real reason why Derek believed the imposter was Odette is because of his desperation to have her back. I don't think the trick was good enough because he really knows Odette. And maybe he was stupid when he didn't know what to say when they asked him why he loved her but I think he's just a man of action and not words. You can see in the whole movie how he's trying to find her and save her so hard. You don't do anything he does for a person you only find beautiful or hot.
