This morning I really sat down and reflected on how I’ve handled being a teacher over the years, and if there’s one video on my profile that I want every teacher to see, it’s this one. There were years where I felt like I was drowning. My negativity toward education was so strong that I genuinely couldn’t see the light at the end of the tunnel. One of the biggest things that changed that for me was learning how to have boundaries and detach from the job. It is beautiful to walk into your classroom every day and make a difference in the lives of your students. But you are not responsible for saving them. You are there to support them, lead them, be an example, and show up for them. And sometimes, simply showing up consistently for these little humans is more powerful than we realize. I can clock in, give my students my 100%, and then clock out and pour back into Carol as a person. Because when I take care of Carol, my teacher self is better too. It is SO much easier said than done, especially in a profession that constantly asks for more from you. But learning to use your work time wisely, set boundaries, and let things go has made such a difference in my life. We put so much pressure on ourselves as teachers to do everything perfectly. But sometimes the best thing we can do is show up, do the best we can, and let it go. It is not our responsibility to save the world.
