not only that, but it’s great to have a second opinion. anytime i transfer care teams, i have them re-evaluate me if possible. It’s obviously a privilege to get evaluated once let alone twice, but if you have the resources definitely use them

Does it count as self diagnosis if a doctor said I most likely have it, bUt I dont have the money to pay for the actual dx

I would say some self diagnoses are valid because I'm self diagnosed with visual snow syndrome it's a hallucination were you see snow or static and I have to self diagnose people just don't believe me vro💔

“Why do you say you’re allergic to bananas if a doctor hasn’t told you that you are?” “Because I break out in hives when I eat a banana.” “That’s not valid what if it’s completely unrelated to bananas and you’re not allergic? Just go to a doctor” “Well I don’t have enough money to go to the doctor for this, I already know I’m allergic.” “No you aren’t allergic until a doctor says you are, I think you’re making this up.”

I mean it kinda depends. For example, if someone is suicidal they can probably accurately assume they have depression

suspecting is fine, directly SAYING your autistic, have ADHD, have DID and acting like you 100% know is weird

It definitely depends on the disorder your diagnosing yourself with and the severity of it and how it appears to yourself and others. Things like DID and OSDD(?) are complex and require professional help, but more apparent disorders like autism, ADHD, Tourette’s, and schizophrenia can be EXTREMELY obvious.

Not everything is so black and white. I get that self diagnosing can be harmful but it's not always something bad. It can help someone understand themselves and present themselves more accurately. Cause self diagnosis doesn't mean you have to claim you have something, it just means you feel yourself fitting the diagnosis you gave yourself.

Diagnosing is only to get help. Self diagnosing isn’t helping you, it’s not helping the people around you, it’s not helping ANYONE.

As much as i agree with self diagnosis being taken way too far,i think a lot of people forget how long and how hard it is to see these professionals, especially for younger people. I’ve been in contact with multiple organisations for YEARS on a waiting list, and still have another year until i get seen. While self diagnosis is being taken too far by loads of people, having an idea of what your symptoms could be is helpful. Showing very specific traits and relating to a lot of other struggles within a disability can help people find solutions to help themselves.

this is very privileged. getting diagnosed can cost THOUSANDS of dollars and most people do not have the ability to afford them, further more some people NEED to self diagnose to get treatment, for example my sister had to self diagnose herself with epilepsy before she was able to get actually medical help.

Professionals do not spend years studying ONE diagnosis 😭 it’s often collected over time but the diagnosis criteria is the same in every textbook, but I get where you’re coming from
