This is only true when the expensive item is better quality… which these day isn’t the case from cars to furniture to electronics to clothes… in all these cases it’s the logo/brand you’re paying for not better quality. I say this changed about 30 years ago

We have a saying here: ‘it’s expensive to be poor.’ If you have limited resources, it’s also hard to stock up when there is a sale (food), meaning you will have to buy it at time from time at full price.
