Visitors and local walkers frequently refer to it simply as “the Wishing Tree.” The custom itself is much older than the Hardcastle Crags example. Coin trees have been found across Britain and Ireland, where people traditionally left coins in trees as offerings connected with luck, healing, or wishes.
