Los Angeles mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt says the city’s homeless population of more than 40,000 are living on the street by choice, arguing the city already has enough shelter and housing capacity for people living on the streets. "They're choosing to be on the street because they want to do drugs," Pratt told @abc7la in an interview last week. "They don't want rules. They don't want to listen." Pratt has suggested that he plans to send unhoused residents to Seattle, “where the mayor will welcome them,” referencing the city’s newly elected socialist mayor, Katie Wilson. Pratt also said that the city's homeless residents were "bused in by scam rehab centers, scam NGOs, and scam homeless nonprofits." As a solution, he proposed sending them to Seattle, where he says Wilson "will welcome them." Los Angeles has the nation's largest unsheltered homeless population, despite billions in city and county spending. Half the population is estimated to be from outside LA. The city had roughly three homeless people for every available shelter bed, according to a 2024 audit from City Controller Kenneth Mejia. The city has lowered its homeless count by almost 18% since Mayor Karen Bass took office in 2022, according to the city’s official website. Still, the issue remains central in the Los Angeles mayoral race ahead of the city’s June 2 primary. Pratt is polling in second place, with about 20% of the vote, behind Bass and ahead of Councilmember Nithya Raman. The top two candidates will advance to the November general election.
