@holvek: A neutron star is an extremely dense remnant of a massive star, formed after a supernova explosion. When the star runs out of fuel for thermonuclear reactions, its core, under the influence of its own gravity, collapses so tightly that protons and electrons fuse into neutrons. The result is an object with a mass roughly equivalent to the Sun but a diameter of only 20–30 kilometers. The density of a neutron star is so great that a single teaspoon of its material on Earth would weigh billions of tons. Such stars have extremely strong gravity and often rotate extremely rapidly—some rotate hundreds of times per second. Many neutron stars are observed as pulsars, emitting narrow beams of radiation that, as they rotate, create regular pulses detectable on Earth. Magnetars also exist—neutron stars with incredibly powerful magnetic fields, the strongest known in the Universe.
