@abbeyskitchen: We’re missing the point with Ariana Grande - because it’s not about one person, it’s about the culture that creates, celebrates, and normalizes it. I believe we need to decentre women’s bodies, and that the current comment sections calling out her body are not helpful. But it’s equally unhelpful to ignore what’s going on, because at a certain point, neutrality becomes passive acceptance. Would love to hear your thoughts below! #arianagrande

My cousin (9) is saying no to almost every food. She says she is now vegan and will be on a diet to look like Ariana. We don't really know what to do.

I get it, but what do we do as a collective when she has come online and openly said her body now is more healthy than what it was before (when in reality anyone with a brain can see that is not healthy). It’s worrying because people, young fans & teens who looked like her before (when she was still slim) will think they’re unhealthy and it pushes them into ED culture and skews their perspectives. I’ve heard lots of mothers say their kids are going down wormholes wanting to look like her, refusing to eat etc, and they’ve refused to take their kids to her concerts for this reason. Ariana grande is not responsible for this you’re right that it’s toxic diet culture, but she is absolutely pushing that diet culture, and romanticising the state of herself through outfits, photos & lyrics and that’s not okay. She absolutely has a responsibility when she has young fans and she knows that.

Yes. As a 37 year old woman who struggles with body image STILL after being a ballerina who had an ED at 11-17 years old at a professional ballet school - I value the way you so eloquently describe the issue. Not blaming anyone, but more the system as a whole 🙏

decentering women's bodies is the first kind of step to developing healthy conversations around bodies, health and eating.

i had an ED for half of my life and think this is incredibly well said. focusing on ariana is besides the point, but having so many hyper thin bodies back in the spotlight and discourse is incredibly triggering

I 100% agree that we can deconstruct social pressures for particular body norms and that can occur without pinpointing someone and picking apart everything wrong with their body. Thank you for this take. The discourse had been making me really sad

Your videos have a totally different quality in the outdoors. Would love to see more informally set (trimmed down production focus) vids from you like this — as weather permits lol.

I think talking about Ariana’s body isn’t going to help her in any way. Only she and her family, team etc can do that. But if talking about her body helps show the young girls that look up to her, and say this shouldn’t be normalised and young girls shouldn’t be striving for thinness, then it’s absolutely a conversation we need to have

I liked this video. I think one other thing people are for some reason not able to grasp is that we’re not blaming Ariana for anything, we’re naming a seen problem. It’s not a failure on her part of any kind. It’s not really that we’re criticizing her. We have empathy for her and want her to be okay

Thank you! I’ve been saying something similar. So many people are focused on if we should be having the conversation, versus HOW we should have the conversation.

How does the system/change though?? Like one single person can’t just start the change? It’s the bigger more influential individuals. So it’s kinda a catch-22

My big question about this, and maybe it would go to trained psychologists who work with patients with ED, is what is the impact on people vulnerable to this issue of people talking about Ariana and her body? Does it help to talk about it? Is there a way we can talk about it that will help more?

in our "normal world" people around her would help her but shes living in Hollywoods messed up dark dark world.it runs on making money not saving lives.doctors included. she ain't getting help.her labels and management probably have her memorial already planned.only way this will stop is if people on mass refuse to buy her stuff.

It’s so nuanced and complex but I think diet culture, and as much it interacts with celebrity/pop culture, and eating disorders, are two sides of the same coin, but they are ultimately two separate issues and I think that the complexity of clinical eating disorders can become too muddied when we mix the two too much, which I think is uncomfortable for a lot of people in these conversations. The experience of developing and having an eating disorder functions aside from whatever happens within pop culture, even-though it is very tightly connected and influenced by it, it is not the same, and I think those experiences are getting very lost and in some ways demonised through a celebrity figure who no one within the conversation actually knows anything personally about. It’s distressing as someone with an eating disorder to see how many people really do not get them (I mean people in comments not you specifically!!)

I just remind people everyone has the right for privacy over their own medical information. I dont understand why we cant talk about the subject without leaving someone out of it. Its not something that needs a face. Or what? Without that its not an interesting topic enough?
