Warrior Cats is THE example on how to do it right — they have Day and Night but no concept of Week, Month, or Year so they use Quarter Moon (Week), Half Moon (Two Weeks), Moon (Month), Season (3 Months) — and then the different time denominations for where in the day they are — sunrise/dawn, sunhigh, sunset, moonrise, moonhigh.

"oh but it says three rising of the-" THAT'S NOT THE THING BEING COMPLAINED ABOUT NOW IS IT? THE COMPLAINT IS ABOUT THE WORD "MOON" USED BY ITSELF TO REFER TO A PERIOD OF TIME, WHICH IS SUPPOSED TO BE USED FOR A MOON CYCLE

Moon = month, moonrises = night. I don’t get how people don’t know the difference like I assumed it was common knowledge

I legit never knew what “moon“ meant when it came to time. I had heard Sam say it was a night and other say it was a month or a week. I did not know it was supposed to be the moon cycle! Thanks for explaining that-

warrior cats in my childhood taught me well that "in a moon" means in a month, everyone who thinks differently needs to read about talking cats

I read a fic once that had some prophecy that said "in 18 summers she will be summoned". it meant 18 months

Using moons to reference 1 night seems like a horrible idea considering the moons main thing is that it’s not visible for several days a month. Do those nights just not count??

If their *fantasy* worldbuilding, has three moons mean three nights then that’s consistent with their world. It’s not a non-fiction book.

this commnet section gave me "grammar police" vibes. when i undrrstand the moon cyvle thing and i even speak a language where the word for month and for moon are the exact same, i would still use "dead within 3 moons" as night as well. simply because in stories its faster. in real life? sure. they were slow. but in literature... you are allowed to change the meaning of words that are no longer used to count the time. and tgis becomes a "dont like, dont read".
