What the hell are you even saying? These were farmlands. People planted them because they used every inch of the ground to produce food. These DO NOT GROW EVERYWHERE IN PORTUGAL. You might get a few trees here and there from wild expansion but 99% of fruit trees were planted and ARE still planted in private settings. You're literally walking across a valley that was made of terraces farmed by villagers that would plant fruit trees for their survival. Not "for fun".

I love it here in Europe where fruit grows everywhere! herbs too! here in the Balkans lots of fennel and rosemary and mint!

There are a couple of states where fruit trees aren’t exactly public, but people plant them at the front edge of their yard and if it overhangs it’s fair game. Being a kid in California was a lot of fun.

We have junk trees instead. They die every 3 to 10 years and shed branches, which are necessary to clean up an aren’t eaten by wildlife thereby supporting ecosystems within cities

You are right. If you go walking freely in Douro valley you can find, depending on the time of the year: apples, cherry, oranges, figs, almondes, nuts, etc. you can take some with you.

I have lived in SW Florida since I was a year old and I remember always having citrus trees in the yards of every place we lived, in the yards of every (or every other) neighbor, and I remember having many options to stop to pick oranges or mangos or grapefruits on a hot summer day when we would play outside as kids. Between the major hurricanes over the last 2 decades and the rapid population growth leveling land, I’m lucky if I see one of those trees within a single neighborhood now. The excuse I hear a lot of is “they fall to the ground and rot and attract snakes”….and I just want to say “then don’t live in Florida”. Then the stores sell oranges for an obscene amount of money like they didn’t grow for free everywhere outside not long ago 😭

They just opened a new park in South Gate, CA called the Urban Orchard Park and it has a bunch of fruit trees planted. 😁
