@thehistoriantraveller: There’s a place in Switzerland that is famous for being the real-life inspiration that J.R.R. Tolkien used for Rivendell. Indeed, the author himself declared that both Rivendell, the Misty Mountains and part of the journey described in the LOTR is based on his 1911 adventure to Switzerland. This beautiful place is called Lauterbrunnen, known also as “The Valley of the 72 Waterfalls”. When I saw the first waterfall coming from the station I was like “wow, now I get it why this made such an impression on him, it looks like a painting!”. If you can’t believe it, check it for yourself. Lauterbrunnen is easy to reach either from Bern or better Interlaken (with a 20 mins train).
