When early Arabs sometimes preferred a lighter brown shade like Damon’s over a very dark Ādam-colored complexion like Michael Jace’s, many assume two things: 1️⃣ That Arabs were white, like Europeans 2️⃣ That they hated Black people Both are wrong. The early Arabs were what we’d today call Black, with shades ranging from deep brown to pitch black. Damon Wayans’ tone would have been called “white” (أبيض) by their standards — but not European white. It simply meant “lighter” within a Black Arab population. Michael Jace’s darker complexion would have been called “Ādam-colored” (آدَم), meaning dark brown, nearly black. They even joked about it, like in this early Arab poem: أنا خيرٌ منك يا قُنبَ الفرس (“I’m better than you, sheath of the horse!”) Yazīd — described as آدَم شديد الأُدْمَة (intensely dark) — was roasted, but it was within a Black Arab population, not across races.
