The buttons on newer dishwashers are supposed to be used with the door open. Turn on>Start>Close door. Supposed to be hidden for clean look.

We have the EXACT SAME placement on our dishwasher; we just push the buttons before we shut the door. OR I bend over and peek if start is lit; somehow this never occurred to me.
