Just read that losing a pet is often worse than losing family. Because that dog or cat was with you every day, good days and your worst days. They never judged you or hurt your feelings, they just wanted you. No humans are around us that much just giving us love

I'm so sorry. I had my Tyler for almost 18.5 years. I lost him June 22, 2026. I've worked from home for 6 years. Tyler saw me through relationships, marriage, becoming a mother, losing a child, divorce. When I had no one else, I had Tyler. He was always there. Your feelings are valid. They aren't just pets. They are ingrained in our entire lives.
I'm writing Tyler's story. I'm not sure if anyone will ever read it besides me (or even want to), but I'm finding it to be very therapeutic. I carry his ashes around the house. I talk to him.
Give yourself grace. Grief is a process. Hugs to you.

Girl when my would kitty passed I hit a depression genuinely so bad that my body wouldn’t let me eat. I lost 15lbs in less than 2 weeks and I don’t remember the month after she passed. Grief hurts. You had kitty for 18 years, that was your first baby, it’s going to hurt so devastatingly 😭 I’m sorry for your loss

Losing my soul cat May of 2025 is the most devastating thing that has ever happened to me. Some good days, mostly bad. It wouldn't hurt so much if we didn't love so hard. I just tell myself they're home, and we're visiting. And one glorious day, years and years from now, we'll find each other again and be reunited for eternity.

Your feelings are valid it doesn't matter if it was "only a pet"!! That is a being that's been in your life for 2/3 of your life almost!!

I had my childhood cat for 18 years and it’s been 14 years since I lost her, and I am still sad on a regular basis that she’s not here. It took 9 years for me to feel ready to get another one. I’m not sure there’s anything you can do to make it better, just feel your emotions. It will get easier as time passes. ❤️

All she ever knew was warmth, love, kindness. Try seeing the grief as an honor bc how lucky were both of you to have so much time, experiences, and love together.

I lost my Charlie 3 years ago. I’m still grieving him. You’re teaching your kid that feelings deserve to be felt, that is a good thing.

You’re not a bad mom. If anything you’re showing her it’s ok to be sad and how to be compassionate. Losing a pet is the absolute worst. I’m so sorry.

It never stops hurting, you just adapt to knowing how to live with the hurt. I just lost my soul dog, of almost 20 years, back in November. I’ll never not miss him. Some days I break down. But everyday I can function a little bit more and more. Some days, not so much. But I try to think about how loved he was/and is. And how he deserves me to be a blubbering mess. He deserves a kind of love that, in his absence I’m a shell. That it is a privilege to have had him, and to carry the weight of missing him. I’m so sorry for your loss.

I believe loosing a pet hurts more, because pets love you unconditionally they love you at your best, they love you at your worst, they're great listeners and they never judge you, and you have them for such a short time.

It hurts so bad and it’s hard because a lot of people don’t seem to understand. The only thing i found helps the pain is time.

Hi Makayla - I worked in the veterinary industry in the HRM for a few years but I also lost my childhood dog 2 years ago. It was devastating to me and unfortunately I still have days that I struggle with it. I just want to mention there is an individual grief counselling program in person or by phone. It’s called Tender Tails. To me this sounded silly at first but it really did help me when I struggled. It’s definitely not an easy thing to go through, I’m sorry for your loss 🫶

No one really knows how to cope, that’s the thing. Coping is learning how to live without something so important to you, the heavy heart is the hardest, you’ll try so hard to put it aside but my tip is don’t try to, feel it , express it, live through it. You are not a bad mom, your human with feelings, your baby girl is apart of you and she feels your feelings she knows it’s not because you love her less , you are having a hard time , she knows your pain. Give yourself time to heal loosing anything takes time to make peace with. It will happen but it won’t be easy💗 I wish you guys the best

Oh Makayla. I am so so sorry for your loss. There is no way to rush grief, or ignore it. That little kitty was with you for 18 years. That’s an incredibly long time for you to have a constant in your life, in your day, for it to all of a sudden be just gone. It will get better, but all you can do is give it the time. Be gentle with yourself. Your daughter is okay, you’re going to be okay and grief isn’t making you a bad parent. Just get extra little person snuggles, cause those always help. ❤️🩹
