my case is completely different but as a ford employee i get a discount and my father is one of the parts directors so he gets a big-time discount (im 21 so he co-signed therefore i can use both) so my repairs r next to nothing. but outside of this case yes do everything u can on ur own or w the assistance of somebody who knows wut they’re doing/an independent shop, preferably in or near the hood same work but a lot cheaper. a lotta ppl near me in jersey go to amboy or elizabeth for it.

Brake pads have changed some of the new cars have electric calipers and you have to have a certain tool to do it

A local shop tried overselling having my refrigerant drained and told me that I needed the shop to do everything in my AC for $1200+$400 installation. I bought ALL new AC parts for $600, called a smaller local shop to drain my freon for $100 and reinstalled all the parts, then recharged my freon.

Don’t rear brake calipers now often require a retraction procedure that needs a scan tool? Brakes are already more complicated.

Your usually spot on with this stuff but if you dont use a scan tool to do brakes on newer GM’S your going to ruin the abs module. Also if memory serves me correct 26 Hyundai needs a scan tool too.

I have a newer Nissan and I can't change my brakes without taking it to a service shop. I need a computer to release the calipers. I was very pissed when I found this out

My dad's new Ram won't let the break pistons retract all the way without a "maintenance mode" option in the computer. it's not far off to require a dealer computer to do that
