Born in Ashland, Kentucky, Keith Whitley grew up influenced by bluegrass music and began performing at a young age. His career took off when he joined the bluegrass band Ralph Stanley & the Clinch Mountain Boys. Later, he transitioned to mainstream country music, signing with RCA Records in the early 1980s. Whitley’s unique voice and emotive delivery quickly gained him a dedicated following and then kicked into a being a house hold name in 1986 with the release of “Miami, My Amy” Unfortunately, Whitley’s life and career were marred by struggles with alcoholism. He died in 1989, at the age of 34 from alcohol poisoning. Despite his brief career, Keith Whitley’s influence on country music remains significant.
