HAPPY PRIDE 🏳️‍🌈 Should celebrities stay out of politics? Thats what Kemi Badenoch thinks, which is interesting as politics affects the lives of everyone! This is one of the topics we discussed on This Morning after David Tennant called her out for her attack on trans rights. For the last few years, the trans community - especially trans women - have faced horrific abuse and are being used by the government to stoke culture wars. Hate crimes against transgender people are now at an all time high. The rhetoric against them is horrific and painting them as a threat to women and calling for schools to deliberately misgender people and not recognise trans people is very reminiscent of the rhetoric against homosexuality in the 80s when Section 28 came in. Firstly, trans women are not a threat to women. In fact they are even more vulnerable to violence than we are. If you want to keep women safe then I’m afraid we need to look at the actual perpetrators of male violence: cis men. But it’s always Not All Men and always All Trans people. 🫠 If the government really wants to keep women and girls safe, I’d like to see what they are doing to tackle the rise in sexism and misogyny. What they are doing to tackle domestic violence. What they are doing to ensure rape cases actually make it to trial. What they are doing to tackle incel culture? How are they tackling the amount of sexual harassment cases in their own political party. 1 woman dies at the hands of a man every 3 days. 1.6 million women experience domestic abuse and 1 in 4 women in the UK experience domestic violence. And it’s not the trans community hurting us. David Tennant is using his platform and influence to call for a fairer society. To fight for injustice. Just as Sir Ian McKeklan used his to fight against Section 28. Just as Marcus Rashford used his celebrity status to persuade the government to provide free school meals to vulnerable children because this government would rather children go hungry. None of us are equal until all of us are equal, and the trans community needs us to stand with them and raise their voices.
