@threadofeverything: Hagar was an Egyptian slave, handed to Abraham by Sarah to manufacture the child God had promised, then mistreated and finally cast out. The most powerless person you could put in a story. And in Genesis 16, pregnant and running through the desert, she becomes the only person in the entire Old Testament to give God a name of her own: El Roi, the God who sees me (Gen 16:13). The first time the words "the angel of the LORD" ever appear in Scripture, that messenger is sent to her (Gen 16:7), and the first voice to call her by her own name is God's. The word for how Sarah afflicted her is the same word used later for Egypt afflicting Israel, so Hagar is a one-woman exodus before there is a nation. And in Genesis 21, cast out and certain her son will die, God "opened her eyes, and she saw a well" that was already there. Her name for God, the God who sees me, opens a thread that runs all the way to the last page of the Bible: they shall see His face (Rev 22:4).
