I trust my husband. That’s why I don’t spend my days worrying about what he’s doing, who he’s talking to or creating scenarios in my head every time he leaves the house. But I also don’t believe trust means becoming oblivious. Some people seem to think that if you trust your partner, you should stop noticing things, stop asking questions, stop observing and just blindly assume that because you love someone, nothing could ever happen. I don’t see it that way. I listen when he talks about his day. I pay attention to the things he tells me. I ask questions. I stay engaged with my relationship and the person I’m sharing my life with. Not because I’m suspicious. Not because I’m looking for something to be wrong. But because trust doesn’t require you to switch your brain off. You can trust someone without living in fear and you can remain aware without living in suspicion. To me, people confuse trust and obliviousness.
