I was told “if you can’t handle sudden pay cuts, this line of work may not be for you.” Then who dafuq is that meant for?!

Job hop, seriously. Companies allocate more money for new hires, not for retaining employees. I wish I was kidding.

People really are delusional about the amount of help companies will offer in any capacity. I asked for a raise, letting my boss know I literally couldn’t afford to stay in the city they needed me to live in to work there due to rent increases. I got zero help. Asked my apartment complex if there was any way to negotiate and they offered to give me the 15 month lease price if I signed for 12 months. That would save me $17/month. 🙄 THEN I got laid off (which is why they wouldn’t commit to helping) and my apartment refused to cancel the lease renewal they pressured me into…which hadn’t even started yet.

I got a raise that moved me into a new tax bracket. The raise went to taxes, and pay stayed about the same. Why did I even bother?

Coworker asked for a raise after his first year, was let go before his second year, but wouldn't have been let go if he was still being paid 15/hr. He was about to graduate with his masters in accounting. This was an accounting firm paying the same as a call center.

They’ve literally made it impossible to ask for fear of being let go or workload increasing

Ask for a raise and they give you a few cents! Or they love you into another tax bracket and they just take more

💯 I can’t just ask for a raise at work. They’d be SO mad at me. They want us to wait for our yearly review to see how we did and they determine our review on how much our raise is

Many jobs peak out in salary in 3 years unless you get a promotion. One problem is that the salaries don't keep up with the market value and they hire a new person who makes more than you because he is getting paid the current market value. Happens in a lot of places. Often, it leaves you no other choice than to just get another job.

The best way to get a pay raise is to change jobs, but that's kinda hard right now

I am a nurse. Our annual ray is about $.25 an hour. The only way to get significant raises is to switch hospitals or specialties. So my yearly raise is $468. If I don’t do overtime.
