In January 1968 I had returned to the states after a year in Vietnam. I was stationed at the Presidio in San Francisco. I walked out the Presidio gate onto Lombard St. A block away there was a flatbed truck and on the back of that truck was Joan Baez singing protest songs against the war. I was standing in the crowd and I must have stood out with my short haircut. I remember we made eye contact and she smiled. I will never forget that day.

My husband’s eyes were also bluer than robin eggs. He passed away three years ago. How I wish I could hear his voice on the telephone.

She wrote this song 1974, about a decade after Dylan broke off their relationship in 1965. Apparently he called her after 9 years while needing comfort from a woman who he had been closely connected to before they both became music icons. This song is about what she felt and thought about his wanting to reconnect after he had dissed her almost a decade prior.
At first Joan denied the song was about him- but later she confirmed it was her response to him sharing his regret.
The song is amazing, and it sends a poignant message...

I worked for Joanie!!! Spoke to her daily on the phone. Worked for her manager. Made breakfast for Bob Dylan. Jakob is a friend of my daughter. Joanie loved Maria Calllas. But Joanie? Her voice. What a gift and pure beauty. I was around the greats. What a life. I have the album she gave me

Muddy guitar :
The song was sparked by an unexpected phone call she received from Dylan, who called her from a phone booth to read her newly written lyrics for "Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts". This call sent Baez reflecting on their tumultuous romance from a decade earlier.
