Important to note that those elvish canoes can not sink, which is why Boromir was sent over the waterfall to be found by the Gondorians and arrived in the boat without issue.

honestly as much as I love the story I think them separating to go and save Merry and Pippin was the dumbest decision since protecting the ring and frodo was significantly more important
