The loneliest I’ve ever been was 3:19am holding a sleeping baby in a dark house. Which sounds weird because I wasn’t technically alone. My baby was literally in my arms. My husband was asleep down the hall. I had family and friends who loved me. But at 3:19am, none of that made the room feel less quiet. I had been awake forever. My arm was numb from holding the baby in the exact position she had finally fallen asleep in. I needed to pee but was terrified to move. My phone brightness was turned almost all the way down. And I remember thinking: Nobody understands how lonely this is. Not motherhood in general. This exact part. The part where the entire world seems asleep while you’re doing one of the hardest things you’ve ever done. The part where you’ve watched the clock go from 1:00 to 2:00 to 3:00. The part where you hear your partner breathing peacefully and irrationally resent them for having the audacity to be unconscious 😂 The part where you’re so tired you can’t remember which side you fed on. Postpartum is weird like that. You can be completely obsessed with your baby and desperately miss your old life. You can feel grateful and miserable at the same time. You can know this phase is temporary and still wonder how you’re going to survive another night. And you can be surrounded by people who love you and still feel unbelievably alone. Then I saw the map. Little yellow lights everywhere. At first I didn’t understand what I was looking at. Then it clicked. Those weren’t random dots. They were moms. Awake. Right then. One was probably nursing. One was making a bottle. One was pumping while watching something she’d already seen six times. One was Googling whether the weird noise her newborn keeps making is normal. One was rocking a baby who absolutely refused to be put down. One was scrolling because putting her phone down meant she might fall asleep. One was crying. One was staring at her sleeping baby’s chest to make sure it was still moving. Thousands of completely different nights happening at the same time. And somehow, seeing that changed the room. Nothing physically changed. My baby was still in my arms. It was still dark. I was still exhausted. But I didn’t feel like the last person awake on earth anymore. And I think that’s what people sometimes misunderstand about postpartum support. Sometimes we don’t need someone to fix anything. I didn’t need advice at 3:19am. I definitely didn’t need another article telling me to “sleep when the baby sleeps.” 🙃 I needed another mom to look across the darkness and say: Yep. Me too. That’s it. Because so many of us are doing motherhood behind closed doors in quiet houses, assuming everyone else is handling it better. They’re not. They’re just behind their own closed door. That’s why every little light on Beacon means something to me. It means somewhere there’s another mom bouncing a baby. Another mom counting ounces. Another mom reheating coffee tomorrow. Another mom wondering when she’ll feel like herself again. Another mom doing her absolute best while secretly wondering if her best is enough. And maybe she needs to see my light too. That’s the part I didn’t expect. Sometimes seeing other moms makes you feel less alone. And sometimes realizing your little light might make another mom feel less alone feels even better. So if you’re reading this during one of those nights… with a baby on your chest, a bottle beside you, a pump attached to you, or your thumb mindlessly scrolling because you’re desperately trying to stay awake… the world isn’t sleeping quite as soundly as it feels. There are lights on in nurseries everywhere. Rocking chairs are moving. Bottles are warming. Pumps are humming. Moms are whispering “pleaseeee go back to sleep” into tiny ears. 😂 Thousands of us are doing this together without ever seeing each other. You might be the only one awake in your house tonight. But you are absolutely not the only mom awake. And sometimes knowing that makes 3:19am feel just a little less heavy. 💛 #mom #baby #MomsofTikTok #momtok #momlife
