@careersbychris: Do good work, but let go of the outcome. Here's a quick * Decentering 101* - Calendar your joy - Find your side quests and hobbies (fill your life with AS MUCH joy as possible) - Accept that you will feel tired (at first), do it anyway - Introduce yourself without mentioning what you do for work - Put your schedule and work hours in your email Signature (creates boundaries) - Keep a brain dump/parking lot (to clear your mind) #careers #careercoach #careeradvice #jobs #worklifebalance
I was so burned out at the beginning of the year, was ready to quit but then decided to try decentering work, I started 2 new hobbies and I'm doing so so much better already 🥹

a brain dump at the end of everyday really helps leaving the work day in the work day - i strt doing this about 1/2 hr before work hours finish - this helps me switch off and change over to my side quest

Thank you for this. I’m emotionally and mentally drained with my job that it’s affecting me physically. I’ve had to tell myself that I am not a doctor or a surgeon. I deserve my days off to enjoy my life.

Career & Networking for Women :
Here are a few things that helped me! The first was diversifying my friends circle and reconnecting with older friends who know nothing about what I do professionally but with whom I really enjoy doing other activities with (like golfing or park picnics). I wrote a post about this because I found lots of women I know end up so focused on their careers and growth and productivity that they surround themselves with friends and hobbies that still link them to their job, so their title becomes a part of their identity. You need to find ways to truly detach, and sometimes that means hanging out with people not affiliated with your work. The second thing was to stop letting work be the first and last thing I did every day. I would roll over in bed first thing in the morning and check my email, and the last thing i’d look at before bed was my calender for the next day. Your brain spends every conscious hour starting and ending on the job, so emotionally it never clocks out. Now I start my day with something that has nothing to do with work. Either I make a great cup of coffee and drink it in silence, I stretch, I watch a few minutes of a reality show I like, and before bed I’ll do a wind down activity that’s NOT connected to my productivity. It’s really helped me isolate my working mindset and my home mindset, even in a job where boundaries are limited because of the seniority of my role.

So I think I am decentering work but then a colleague said I didn't care about the work because I stay out of drama, rarely gossip and just work and go home

I did this and it is amazing. I will sing a dumb song even if I start thinking of work after work. Sing until I am distracted.

Thats it. I always tell people at work that they have to create a great life after hours to offset the bs. If you don’t do that, all that you are left with is the bs if the job.
