@brashnutrition: Energy balance tells us what happens during changes to body weight. I don’t talk about weight loss on here for many reasons, but I see a lot of arguments about weight loss and wanted to talk about something I’ve noticed. People seem to be dead set on energy balance, which is a key underlying physiological process to weight change. However, an intervention comprises other “softer” sciences, and I think it’s really interesting that these are never considered as a fundamental part of weight change interventions. This is more about the philosophy of science than weight loss.
I think that’s why GLP-1 medications have become so popular because losing weight is often much harder for many people, it’s not a lack of willpower — it’s constantly feeling hungry, thinking about food, fighting cravings, and trying to stay on track day after day. GLP-1s help by reducing appetite and quieting down that constant “food noise,” making it easier to eat less without feeling like you’re battling yourself all the time. For many people, that can make weight loss feel much more manageable and sustainable.

I've known since I was probably 7 years old that weight loss was about calories in/out.
I only got bigger until I was 26, when a switch flicked in my brain that finally enabled me to eat less food and be satisfied with that. Crucially this wasn't something I did, it just happened to me. For all the years before that the way my brain just worked is that I needed to keep eating.
I think a small part of this change was me falling in to a depression, using exercise to try to help myself, and falling in love with running. Running gave me specific goals that I knew could be helped with weight loss.
CICO is the mechanism, but it's not a complete solution. Humans have brains that don't make the best decisions. Weight loss is mainly about how we get an individual's brain to allow them to get in to and stay in a calorie deficit.

The issue is it’s hard to know how many calories our bodies need on a daily basis when I’m luteal and have a heavy cardio day, I want to eat like 2500 cals, but that’s being frowned at by podcast bros who would say my TDEE is 1900… like wtf are we to do

Calories in vs out is a good baseline to look at. Then figure out all the other factors. I’ve had weight issues and ED issues my entire life and know so much in theory but practice is a whole different story

This is brilliant, honestly. I’m a psychology graduate working in mental health and from that perspective I 100% agree.

I just came to their realization that my anxiety medication has kept me in a 2-year cycle of dramatic weight gain and loss so I'm going to be asking to go on a different medication today
