It’s insane that in the UK your rates are not locked for the entirety of the mortgage term. In the US it’s locked and you can re-mortgage if the rates go down but they can never go up on you!!

Sorry girl. It’s not that you didn’t look at the numbers. We genuinely haven’t seen interest rates like this in decades, no could even fathom it would happen

I think this is something that is not explained well to home buyers particularly first time buyers given the historically long term lows there have been over the past 10-15 years.

You'll be in for an even bigger shock when you realise you have to pay tax on the gross rental return you make on that buy-to-let and not the net after your mortgage payments.🙃

Mine is 1.32% ending in August. Going up by £200 a month, I live alone *sigh*. I knew the rate was going to go up and thankfully, this worst case scenario is still very very cheap in terms of monthly payments, I am just miffed that the rates are where they are, they were looking so much better before Trump 😒😒😒

I find it interesting that people are shocked. I bought last year and I stress tested my finances up to an interest rate of 10%. Fully aware that after my fixed term ends interest rate could increase

I knew the average rate was 5% and 1% was an anomaly, so when borrowing, I figured out what a 5% rate would cost me for my budget and made sure I didn’t go over that with the property I chose and how much I borrowed. I hope rates go down but 5% has generally been the average over time. We likely won’t see 1-2% for a very long time.

For most residential homeowners, five years paying back interest and principal would make a decent dent in their mortgage, cushioning some of the blow of higher rates.

Hi! I am going from a 1.14% to something dastardly in October. Only saving grace. Ltv is under 38% so in the worst case scenario it’s going to be £400 more a month paying off the loan rather than interest only. Still sucks though…
