As an Atheist, I don’t think it’s that hard to understand, honestly. Humans hate feeling alone and uncertain. Religion can provide people with meaning, guidance, forgiveness, hope, and the feeling that someone is always there for them. Even if you see it as a coping mechanism, it is an incredibly effective one. The idea that there’s a higher power looking out for you is comforting in the same way it’s comforting to know you have someone you can rely on mentally when things get tough.

We live everyday full with coping mechanisms. We are biased on everything that we like and on everything that we dislike. Even our human connections are created solely out of circumstances. I dont believe in God, but I believe in believing. It doesnt have to be something real for u to believe in. People can get inspired by concepts or ideas. Acknowledge ur copes and live with them, or distinguish them. Coping isn’t necessarily bad, its a way of living. Just make sure ur copes are ur own. Tune them according to ur ethics, ur idea of life. Fearing them means fearing yourself. Forcing them onto others means doubting them yourself. There is no standard recipe for living. The only rule for me is to not damage the living for others. And peoples idea of religion has caused plenty of that. Be kind because u believe in it, even if believing it means believing to something non existent. Be. Live. Not because there is meaning in it, but because u might like creating one of ur own. U might not. But something with no meaning is equally free as something meaningful.
