Contemporary fiction often helps us understand the world we’re living in, but classics remind us how little human nature has really changed. That’s why the best books from either category never feel outdated

Definitely hold a strong love for both, I quite enjoy reading local authors works !! :) There is so much talent currently that is dismissed because it isn’t a classic yet

I prefer classics. I have literal chills every time I come across a line that resonates with me and to think this was written centuries ago only adds up to the sensation.

I was raised on the grim and brooding classics of Russian literature, and it is precisely for this reason that, whenever I pick up a contemporary novel or detective story, I instinctively measure it by the depth of its tragedy and the weight of its themes. Classical and modern literature are two deeply interconnected systems. They will inevitably grapple with the same fundamental questions, only they will articulate them in the distinct "language" of their respective eras.

english is not my first language but i really do love classics either in english, french or my mother tongue hungarian. classics teach about ourselves in my opinion, because you can't help but look into yourself while trying to relate to characters written hundrends or thousands of years before you. but contemporary literature is extremely important as well, because the cover topics not discussed enough neither throughout history nor the present. i'm reading ozamu dasai's no longer human in english but i love reading books in their original language so i'm trying to learn japanese. also off topic i really love your videos, the topics and the vocabulary you use is sooo useful for someone whose learning english

i'm biased since i'm working on an english phd but i prefer classics. it's shallow of me, but i just don't personally like short sentences and sentence fragments, and contemporary lit in general uses those in abundance.

It’s very strange to say but I had a dream where I was in a cathedral last night where it was nighttime and the place was full of books and I have met you. I have told you about how I find your content very interesting and stated what I’m studying which is psychology though I am fascinated about literature and philosophy.

I would have to say i prefer classics. A pet peeve of mine in literature is cliches, and I seem to find less of this is classics, or at least the occurrences are less obvious to me as a modern reader than if i was reading modern fiction.

I prefer a little bit of both. I, however, adore the picture of Dorian Grey. My English teacher introduced me to Wilde’s work and I genuinely cannot get enough.

I always go with classics because English isn’t my first language and it’s a good way to expand my language as classics are a bit more complex. However with my first language (Spanish) I could never go with classics, Spanish is a very difficult language even for natives.

Contemporary books are fun to read, especially rom-coms I'm a sucker for them. But classics are immortal. They never fail to amaze me with how relevant they still are today and how much humanity has changed over time.

I love classics for a lot of reasons, but most of all the use of language. It’s hard to find contemporary fiction that isn’t badly written. Although I do enjoy contemporary oftentimes, because it’s easier to relate to and digest.

¿Has pensado en leer literatura latinoamericana? Hay varios muy buenos que hablan sobre épocas de colonialismo, y claro también hay varios contemporáneos muy buenos, :)

The issue with contemporary is the fact that there’s no soul no voice. Again there are amazing books out there with unique characters but capitalism having controlled our present too much with social media pushing books that are ‘simpler’ over creative. Everything is about profit than art while a lot fight for a chance to change this through words, it’s not pushed a lot which makes us go back to works that seem the same just with different formula but also classics have their issues while they teach us knowledge, original dense language and the nature of human beings. They can be too outdated and difficult to be understood that you need to read them twice or analyze them and read the history around it to understand it (again it’s written in a time that isn’t ours) it still has its own character and voice. At least you’re not reading the same books over and over again (I am going back to classics after reading too much contemporary)

I prefer contemporary fiction at this stage of my life. As a young reader into high school I preferred more of the Classics but with the heavier responsibilities in adulthood and a demanding and stressful job I have found I enjoy the escapism and easy reading of contemporary fiction. The more mindless and fluffy the better. There's still room for classics but it's not my go to.
