what about the children who are homeschooled and rely heavily on the internet for their education? i’ve just finished my GCSEs and genuinely can’t imagine getting through them without youtube tutorials, online revision communities, and content on instagram and facebook. I’m 16 so this ban won’t affect me, but this is absolutely ridiculous and shouldn’t be at the top of Keir starmer’s priorities. he’s apparently also trying to enforce a “curfew” for 16-17 year olds. i have a job, about to start college, and i can drive soon, but oh no i have a curfew on when i can use my phone!! makes absolutely no sense. there are far bigger issues facing the UK than teenagers having a little scroll on tiktok, instagram, facebook, and so on. this isn’t protection, it’s control. the only people who should be deciding how much time a child spends online are their parents, not the government. every family is different, and parents know their own children better than politicians do. also how would this even be enforced? most teenagers know more about the internet and how to get around it, than the people making these rules and they will easily find ways around it within days. instead of banning social media for everyone under 16, why not focus on better online safety and stronger moderation? it makes no sense there’s so much bigger things to worry about than this.
