@primalempress: I am so happy about this. I have no idea how they will police this or make it work but it’s such an important step forward in protecting children. #socialmedia #childprotection #socialmediaban #ukpolitics #socialmediavsreallife
so so glad Snapchat is covered, it is without doubt the most dangerous app for kids especially with messages deleting so quickly.

You Tube is a bit silly, my son is 12 and makes his own mountain biking edits on You Tube. He spends hours out there making jumps and challenging himself, as well as the editing /tech skills he will get. As a parent it's my responsibility to monitor and ensure he is educated about the risks.

I'm so thrilled about this. I haven't even let my 10 year old daughter have a phone at the moment. I known what the Internet/Social media is like.

As a parent of an 11 year old who's hyper aware of things she shouldn't be, and I've tried so hard to shield her from it. I'm so so happy about this ❤️

It’s certainly a step in the right direction! I’m happy about this! I’m curious how it will be policed! Children are so vulnerable and we should be protecting them so I’m glad the government are taking action!!

my parents used parental controls. are parental controls not there anymore?
they said "we don't care what others are doing, we care about what you're doing" - they were doing this in the early 00s.

I’m all for this but I really wish more pressure would be put on these social media companies and the content they push out and how they handle trolls and bully’s. I feel they are not being held responsible like they should be. My youngest is only 9 and just watches YouTube. He’s shown no interest in any other forms of social media. My eldest is 15 but by the time the bans in place he’ll already be 16.

My son doesn't have social media thankfully he's 14. He does use YouTube as a resource for his home education and he will continue to 😁

I just don’t know how it’s going to be policed. The kids will find ways to get round it. I agree that it’s horribly bad for kids. I’m lucky that my kids were pretty good, they accepted no SM until they were old enough for the apps, accepted that I would know their passwords and they used it very sensibly. My youngest is 18. He was the last of his year group to have a smart phone, and that was at the start of secondary. I think he was the last of the year group where it was easier to police. I don’t even know how parents can police it any more, let alone the government. I think banning smart phones for under a certain age would work better.

I didn’t let my son have social media until he was nearly an adult and I stand by that decision. Bullying is bad enough but if they cannot get away from it it will consume them

Interesting, this is a very shiney view of this. But what it actually is forcing teens to underground site, telegram is 100x worse. But not only that everyone will now have to give over there ID and personal verified data to the gov and social media companies. Then you are giving 16yo the vote but confining there learning on things to mainstream and conventional media. And we all know how things are presented in conventional media. I understand the want for this but this is not a win I’m afraid.

As much as I agree with you and I enforced this with my own kids, parents will just setup accounts with adult birthdays to shut the kids up whining. Lots of parents just don’t care, so kids without get bullied and be sneaky to get it.
