A judge in Las Vegas today sentenced a former California gang member to 40 years to life in prison for his role in the 1996 shooting of rapper Tupac Shakur. Duane "Keffe D" Davis, 63, is to serve 20 years to life for first-degree murder and an additional 20 years to life for using a deadly weapon. Judge Carli Kearny in Nevada's 8th Judicial District sentenced Davis after hearing from Shakur's sister Sekyiwa "Set" Shakur and stepbrother, Maurice "Mopreme" Shakur. A jury convicted Davis on Aug. 31 after nine days of testimony. Davis repeatedly spoke publicly about his role in Shakur’s Sept. 7, 1996, shooting in interviews and in his “Compton Street Legend” memoir. Prosecutors say he supplied the gun and was in the white Cadillac when his nephew, Orlando Anderson, fired the fatal shots. Anderson died in a shootout at a Compton car wash in 1998; he was 23. Kearny today (Tuesday, October 13) cited Davis public comments about Shakur's murder that are "something like, 'Yeah, I was involved in this, but I'm different. I've moved on. I got out of Compton. I'm a grandfather now.'" "I'm here to tell you that's not how this works. Okay? You don't get to take a man from his family. You don't get to take his very life, his whole future from him, and just walk away from it. Especially when that man is Tupac Shakur. The world never forgot about him and his death, and neither did Las Vegas. It took us 30 years, but at this time, you are going to face justice for what you did on September 7, 1996," Judge Kearny said. Prosecutors said Davis murder was part of a feud between the South Side Crips and the Mob Piru gang, which was tied to the Bloods, and as retaliation for Shakur attacking Anderson earlier in the night at the MGM Grand casino in connection with a gang brawl at the Lakewood Mall in California weeks earlier. Davis told police Sean “Puffy” Combs offered $1 million for killing Shakur during a meeting at Greenblatt’s Deli & Fine Wines on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, but he never received it. Davis' trial included testimony about protections Los Angeles police detectives offered Davis while investigating the 1997 shooting of Christopher "The Notorious BIG" Wallace that apparently hindered Las Vegas police's plans to arrest Davis for Shakur's murder. Davis has been in jail since his arrest on Sept. 29, 2023. He'll be credited for 731 days served. #law #court #crime
