@mlstarner: Have you ever wished you wanted something more than you actually do? Faith can feel like that. You know what you believe — or what you're supposed to believe — but the desire isn't there the way you think it should be. And you can't argue yourself into it. You can't discipline yourself into it. You can't manufacture wanting. "Spirit of God, Descend Upon My Heart" assumes that's exactly where a lot of people are. It doesn't ask for more information or better theology. It asks for the desire itself — to believe, to follow, to want what you know is good. And here's the thing: asking for the desire is already a kind of faith. The prayer itself is the beginning of the thing you're praying for. This hymn gives you the words for that.
