I believe it’s time to fundamentally rethink the structure of America’s housing market. The current system simply isn’t working for most people. We’re building homes that are often lower in quality, packed closer together, and sold at prices that many working families can’t afford. Instead of designing a housing market around people and communities, we’ve allowed financial markets to determine its direction. Large investors understand supply and demand. When they purchase large numbers of homes, reduce the available inventory, and drive up prices or rents, they gain significant market power. The result is that more families are priced out of homeownership and forced to pay increasingly higher housing costs. Housing should first and foremost be about giving people a stable place to live and build a future—not maximizing returns for those with the capital to buy up entire neighborhoods. It’s time to rebalance the market so it works for families, workers, and first-time homebuyers again.
