I’m mixed Indian and white and I feel this! I’m often mistaken for Latino or Eurasian. My dad was born in Uganda and came to the UK when he was 14, and his side of the family were never very “traditionally Indian” in a lot of ways. One thing that’s helped me is reading and hearing about others’ experiences. For example the Mixed Messages newsletter Isabella Silvers, and work by Natalie Morris

I’m mixed race too and people don’t ever think I’m what I am 🤦♀️you feel like you have to prove it via pictures all the time . I’ve been told I look Asian , Spanish , Turkish. My mother is white and my father is black Jamaican 🇯🇲.

I can definitely relate to this and years ago peoples comments really used to get to me and it created a whole load of extra identity issues but I think what helped me A LOT was surrounding myself around other mixed race people especially those who feel strong in their identity. Also,as I’m half Caribbean having other Caribbean friends has helped me feel a sense of community and closeness to that side of me. It’s easier said that done but at the end of the day you know where you come from and no one can tell you any different.

??? Being Dominican isn’t a specific race it’s a nationality , bond with your dominican family , immerse yourself in the culture , let go of labels, be ‘you’

Girl I’m mixed and even I was shooketh when you said you were 😂. Also regarding learning more about your Dominica side, just do it, learn the how to cook the food, the customs, dialect, history etc and do it unapologetically. I learnt more about my Caribbean side as an adult then I did growing up as a kid in the UK.

Same mix as me and I also get told I don’t look mixed because I have loose curls/straight hair. Did you say Dominica?

i think seeing mixed race representation is important! it makes me feel more seen. i really like drag race, and chai tea grande talking about how she calls herself ‘double no half’ as a mixed race person made me really happy. i also recommend loyle carner’s music, like the song ‘looking back’ !
