I was left alone with six children after my husband died — at the funeral, a teenage boy I'd never seen before walked up to me, handed me an envelope, and said, "Your husband asked me to make sure you got this." When we found out that my husband, James, had terminal cancer, my heart broke. James and I had been together since high school. By the time we were in college, he'd already bought me a ring and told me he wanted to marry me and that I wasn't allowed to say "no." We laughed about that throughout all 20 happy years of our marriage. We had six wonderful children, and our youngest daughter had just turned four. We did everything we possibly could to save James's life. We traveled all over the state to see different doctors. But nothing helped. James died. I remember how, just two weeks before, we were all sitting together in his hospital room. He was playing board games with the boys while the girls ran around them, trying to get them to play with their dolls. I held his hand until the very end. It felt like everything inside me was burning from the pain. I organized the funeral, and so many people came. People from all over our small town. James had always been so friendly, kind, and willing to help anyone who needed it that probably more than half the town knew him. As the funeral was ending and the guests began to leave, I was still standing beside the casket, almost unable to move. It was so hard for me to say goodbye to James. Then suddenly, a boy walked up to me. He looked about 14. His eyes were red from crying. It was obvious that he was devastated by James's death. But I'd never seen him before. I looked at him and gently asked: "Honey, are you here with your parents?" He held out an envelope to me and said: "Ma'am, I have to make sure you get this. James asked me to give you this envelope after he died." My hands were shaking. I took the envelope and tried to ask the boy how he knew James and why James had asked him to deliver it. He took a breath and said: "I've known James my whole life. Open the envelope, and you'll understand everything. He left something for you, and it was extremely important to him." My head was already spinning. I opened the envelope and pulled out a letter written by James. From the very first line, my knees gave out, and I grabbed the back of a chair in the front row. When I got to the part explaining who the boy standing in front of me really was, I burst into tears. See less
