Some well-known Sunni narrations include: 1. The Prophet ﷺ wept for Husayn * It is narrated that Jibril informed the Prophet ﷺ that Husayn would be killed in the land of Karbala. The Prophet was shown some of its soil and became saddened. This narration is found in works such as Musnad Ahmad and other Sunni hadith collections. 2. “Husayn is from me and I am from Husayn” * The Prophet ﷺ said: “Husayn is from me and I am from Husayn. Allah loves whoever loves Husayn.” * Reported in Jami’ al-Tirmidhi. 3. Umm Salama’s narration * Umm Salama narrated that the Prophet ﷺ was informed of Husayn’s future martyrdom and was given red soil from the place where he would be killed. The Prophet told her that when the soil turned to blood, Husayn would have been martyred. Versions of this report are found in Sunni works such as Al-Mustadrak ala al-Sahihayn. 4. Reports from Ahl al-Bayt and Companions * Sunni historians such as Ibn Kathir and Al-Dhahabi mention reports that the Prophet ﷺ foretold Husayn’s martyrdom and grieved over it before it occurred. According to both Sunni and Shia historical sources, Imam Husayn was martyred on the 10th of Muharram, 61 AH (680 CE) during the Battle of Karbala in present-day Karbala. Sunni scholars generally regard him as a righteous and beloved grandson of the Prophet ﷺ who was wrongfully killed.
