@cambridgeuniversity: The UK government says under-16s will be banned from social media platforms like TikTok by spring 2027. Cambridge psychologist Professor Amy Orben gives her reaction to today's announcement, and measures it against the evidence we already have about social media restrictions. Zero to do with child safety and everything to do with information control

My kids are older, but I’m not a fan of the total ban approach. certainly not at 16. Maybe 14.. After all 16 year olds are deemed old enough to vote? There should be more child-friendly censorship, algorithm control -

16 is far too old. Teenagers and even kids should learn about and see other peoples experiences out in the real world. This just creates a bubble with their parents views and restricts their ability to socialise with friends.

The most vulnerable will still use it, but have less support. The platforms need more regulation, not restrictions

When you say "the debate will continue", arent debates supposed to happen before decisions are made? What's the point of a debate after a rushed political decision is made for us.

It is not welcome. This is not about safety, this is about control. If this was about safety theyd make sure the apps themselves get fixed, as if it's anything like Australia, this is gonna be easy to get around.

With bands like this , social media companies might start losing a lot of customers and start implementing better content management systems and moderation. Because now they don't care.

"The government cannot make social media safe...?" Isn't that supposed to be the question for tech companies first? They don't want to make it safe. So here we are.
