She actually thought it was ulcer because of the discomfort she was feeling. During the scan, when I placed the probe around one of her adnexal areas (near the ovary), she immediately screamed because of the tenderness. That was when I carefully focused more on that area despite her pain. I asked about her last menstrual period, and she told me she was on family planning. She had even taken her repeat injection dose about 2 weeks earlier. Her uterus looked normal with a normal uterine lining… But surprisingly, the ultrasound showed something around the ovary area, a thickened rim with a gestational sac, yolk sac, and fetal pole. A pregnancy was developing… but not inside the womb. A blood sample was taken for a serum pregnancy test, and the result confirmed what the ultrasound showed: She was pregnant. But this was not a normal pregnancy location. It was an ECTOPIC PREGNANCY. An ectopic pregnancy happens when a fertilized egg implants and grows outside the uterus, most commonly inside the fallopian tube, instead of inside the womb where a baby normally develops. It is important to know that being on family planning greatly reduces the chance of pregnancy, but no method is 100% effective. Also, abdominal pain during pregnancy or a missed period should not always be ignored or assumed to be ulcer. Early ultrasound and proper medical evaluation can help detect problems early and protect a woman’s health. Listen to your body.
