📍Ice & Island Lake Trail in Silverton, CO — 7.5 miles roundtrip. 2664 feet in elevation gain. Island Lake may have been one of the very first alpine lakes I ever saw pictures of online in Colorado. I added it to my bucketlist, and said to myself, “One day.” My first roadtrip after moving to Colorado 5 years ago was actually to the San Juans. I wanted to see Ouray, Silverton, Durango, and Telluride’s fall foliage display. I remember looking up this hike then, seeing the mileage, and said to myself, “Yeah, right. Maybe one day.” 5 years past, thousands of miles of hiking and feet climbed later, I decided it was time to return to the San Juans. One day became today, and I am finally strong enough to handle two back-to-back days of long distance hiking. @It’sme_javii 🎣 and I did the Blue Lakes Trail outside of Ridgway the day before this, regrouped for the night at camp with @Lisa 🏔️ & her hubby, and started off for Ice & Island Lake the next morning. It was straight uphill the whole way. I mean, seriously, straight UP! I’ve never been more aware of the vertical gain, the fire in my lungs, but also so grateful for legs strong enough to carry me up (+ a little help from Molly, Lisa’s puppy) and the strength training I’ve put myself through the last few years. Such a steep, but gorgeous hike. Ice Lake was as blue as you could dream of, and the sun was still shining over us for our first break. Weather rolled in, right on time, as we arrived at Island Lake. We were able to take some pictures, soak in the view, enjoy some espresso and snacks, before the dark clouds rolled in signaling us our time to head down. No sooner than we started our descent, all hell - or should I say HAIL - broke loose. Thunder, lightning, rain, hail pummeled down on us. We ran for at least a mile+ to get back to the treeline, took shelter for a few minutes as the hail passed, and full sent it back down to the trailhead covered in mud, soaked completely through, and freezing cold. What a time! It felt so good to check this hike off the bucketlist, combined with Blue Lakes the day before, and I truly cannot recommend these hikes enough to anyone visiting the San Juan region looking for the perfect mountain challenge with the biggest payout. 🙏🏼🩵🏔️ #islandlake #icelake #Hiking #colorado #sanjuanmountains
