My aunt who was 24, was VERY brutally beaten to the point her windpipe was broken and every bone in her face and 70% of her body were broken. She got a funeral, he got to live in prison for life. He told his friends he chose her because she was white. They are the ones that turned him in after they heard the story on the news. He was given the death penalty, but got it reduced to life without parole because his defense argued there weren’t enough black people on the jury ( it was actually 6 black people and 6 white. But the judge was considering it. My grandmother was battling cancer and the family agreed to the sentence change because she couldn’t have handled going through the trial again. The evidence was overwhelming. Including her skin under his nails 3 days later, along with A LOT of DNA evidence. But he played the race card and it got him the outcome he wanted.
