How do you avoid swirls and uneven sides, I can’t never get sides even, what resin you use for flood coat?

I hope this makes sense but what about the extra resin that runs down the sides and onto the bottom/sides n starts drying.? wouldn’t you have to sand all of that again after it sticks to it and all dries together or how do you pick up the piece and move it to finish drying without it getting messed up. I’m a beginner who’s trying to learn.
