There is a lot of diversity of beliefs in Buddhism. As a side note, Mahayana includes Vajrayana as well, which is also split into multiple schools.

Vajrayana is not a separate branch. it is a specialised kind of Mahayana. Actual branch of Buddhism are- Shravakyan (among which Theravada is the only existing one in current day), Mahayana (which is called Bodhisattvayan and also comprises of a specialised kind of Mahayana called Vajrayana and the third branch is called PratyekBuddhayan(Where isolated Buddhas exist in between two Samyaksambuddhas time - not rn since we are in the age of Sakyamuni Buddha)

I wrote my university thesis on Sri Lankan Buddhism and British colonialism. Buddhism being tied to national identity can be traced directly to colonialism and its obsession with categorizing and defining other cultures and religions. In Sri Lanka’s case this creation of national Buddhist identity led directly to civil war.

Also could you dig into how the current dalaï lama leads the Tibetan government? What exactly is this Tibetan government? Does it run under or alongside the chinese government? I have been to Tibet personally and I don’t remember hear people mentioning there’s 2 governments.

a couple of things here: firstly, Tibetan Buddhism is the largest branch of Vajrayana, but it's not the only branch. the Japanese Shingon tradition is also Vajrayana, as are a couple of esoteric Chinese Buddhist schools. Vajrayana is not defined by the tulku system, but by Buddhist esotericism. secondly, the Dalai Lama is the spiritual leader of Tibet, but he is not the current leader of the CTA in India--He stepped back from that role in the 2010's. China does indeed want to choose his reincarnation, but there's nothing that says he HAS to reincarnate. there's some question as to whether he will continue his line of reincarnations on this earth, or if he will choose to go to some other world where he can continue his mission. he will eventually make this clear when he feels that his mission in his current life has ended.
