There is a lot of diversity of beliefs in Buddhism. As a side note, Mahayana includes Vajrayana as well, which is also split into multiple schools.

In 1587, during China’s Ming Dynasty, after the Gelug school began adopting the system of reincarnation, successive Dalai Lamas were recognized by the central government of China at that time. The current Dalai Lama was also appointed in 1940 by the Chinese government of that period. Therefore, your claim that the Dalai Lama should not be recognized by the Chinese government is completely incorrect. The history of the Dalai Lama being recognized by the Chinese government has lasted for more than 400 years, and it will not change in the future.

Also could you dig into how the current dalaï lama leads the Tibetan government? What exactly is this Tibetan government? Does it run under or alongside the chinese government? I have been to Tibet personally and I don’t remember hear people mentioning there’s 2 governments.

Vajrayana is not a separate branch. it is a specialised kind of Mahayana. Actual branch of Buddhism are- Shravakyan (among which Theravada is the only existing one in current day), Mahayana (which is called Bodhisattvayan and also comprises of a specialised kind of Mahayana called Vajrayana and the third branch is called PratyekBuddhayan(Where isolated Buddhas exist in between two Samyaksambuddhas time - not rn since we are in the age of Sakyamuni Buddha)

I only ever learned about Mahayana (the big wheel) and Theravada (the little wheel) in school. I never knew there was a sizeable third school.

Tulkus aren’t what define Vajrayana, it’s that it’s an esoteric system based on transformation over renunciation, the three mysteries of speech/action/thought, and has unique practices built on that, which require direct introduction and imitation by a lama. It’s also present in Japan though Tendai and Shingon.
