On March 4, 2023 around 2am, 26-year-old Jamila Abdi drove her longtime friend 29-year-old Fariya “Fay” Yusuf home to her apartment in Seattle’s Rainier Valley neighborhood. The two sat in the car together for about 10 minutes before Fariya went inside. What Fariya didn’t know was that Jamila never intended to let her walk away. While Fariya was inside, Jamila got out of the car and began walking around the apartment building — already holding a gun. She then bombarded Fariya with texts and calls to lure her back outside. Fariya came back down, wine glass in hand, on the phone with another friend. That friend was still on the line when it happened. Fariya walked toward Jamila, and the moment they were within feet of each other, Jamila pulled the gun from behind her back and opened fire — 14 shots at close range. She kept shooting even after Fariya hit the ground. Several of those wounds alone would have each been fatal. The friend on the phone heard the shots before the line went dead. Jamila then ran to her car parked about 100 yards away and fled. Fariya was pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation moved quickly. Fariya’s own mother identified Jamila — she had known her since she was a child. Surveillance footage captured everything. When police searched Jamila’s mother’s home in West Seattle, they found pink gloves matching the ones worn by the shooter in the video. Jamila was arrested 6 days later on March 10. She then told three completely different stories: 1. They were talking about Fariya’s toxic boyfriend, Fariya went inside for wine and never came back, so she left 2. The surveillance video wasn’t her — someone had a duplicate car, duplicate plates, and cloned her phone 3. Fariya’s boyfriend actually carjacked her and was the one who drove Fariya home None of it held up. She was charged with first-degree murder and bail was set at $2 million. The official motive was never confirmed. The boyfriend’s name was never released.
