@danihpayne: The governments own review couldn’t find good evidence that social media causes harm to young people’s mental health…. So why are we banning it? 🤔 #ukpolitics #MentalHealth #socialmedia #government #Science
Zero to do with child safety and all to do with information control

I was taught to never give your name and address on the internet, now I'm supposed to upload my ID with all my information? How is that anymore safe?

So well put 👏👏 the youth parliament select committee report found a similar point about responsibility being shifted away from social media companies

What they should do is push companies to not have predatory algorithms and educate parents and children about internet safety!

Almost all of the top people in the child protection space are against the ban. When the Government didn’t get anywhere with them, the Government started excluding the professionals and tech experts from the discussions and switched to talking with parents, who, unfortunately, aren’t experts on this complex subject

The other important thing that’s not acknowledged is that yes there are issues with social media but it plays an important role in countering the ever increasing censoring and lack of transparency in traditional media. A lot of people get their news from the apps and I think that without access, the last three years for example would have looked very different in terms of our understanding of the world and what’s happening in it, especially for young people who are supposed to become future voters.

I’m a parent of young teenagers and from my point of view this looks like a government banning something it doesn’t understand. It’s the same moral panic as ‘violence in video games’ or ‘video nasties’. There are negatives in social media, but there are also positives. Instead of an outright ban there should be tighter regulation and more done to educate children and make them digitally literate. This is the responsibility of schools, parents, the government and tech companies. Everyone is shirking their responsibilities at the moment. What we will be left with is a generation of young adults who can’t navigate social media and will be more prone to manipulation as they will just be thrown in the deep end and left to figure it out when they become an adult.

Interesting. The minute this happens. I wonder how many NEW social media apps are gonna pop up (that young kids will use).

The real effect is no more anonymous social media accounts, which has its own set of positives and drawbacks.

The responsibility should lie with the platforms themselves. They should be the ones held accountable for what happens on their sites, not the entire country.

I don’t see how social media isn’t bad for kids though. Way less time outside, Way less physical activity, Cyber Bullying, Addictive algorithms and scrolling for hours a day, Comparisons growing up to the ‘best and brightest’ living ‘perfect’ lives etc….. I don’t see how studies can say there’s almost no causal link between a child being exposed to all of that and harm.

really do not like this policy its extremely counterproductive. Govt should never have authority over your personal choices!! This ban is only going to make teens find another unsafe platform to use

The ban has a huge amount of support from parents because social media is causing problems at home. This might not be mental health specifically, it can be a whole host of things. Judging Australia’s ban for this short amount of time also isn’t great, of course it’s going to be difficult to enact with kids who had access previously. But fewer kids will have access and most likely at older ages as time goes on.

Whilst I still think the ban is a good thing…I hear that the shift of responsibility is concerning.

Is there any evidence about what might work instead to keep young people safer online? And what might improve their mental health instead?
