Not a professional, just grew up doing drywall and framing, but my process for that repair would be to sand the seam down with 60 grit, lay a thick coat of fast drying mud down the seam, lay the tape in while feathering it into the base layer with your knife, and once you’ve removed the excess mud you can then lay down a coat over the top of the tape and let it dry, then you can do a final sand.

You have to wet the tape with mud. That tape with holes, if there’s any shifting at all, will crack. I would never use it again. Fixing holes, that’s the way to go, but with joints you gotta use tape.

Hot mud works good for patches like that. With sticky mesh tape hot mud is what you’re supposed to use. I hung the drywall and taped and mudded my new house, it sucks lol. Takes a lot of patience and trial and error to get decent at it!

As long as you get some primer paint on before they use the shower you should be ok.

my dad was told to use the mesh when going up against old drywall and tape for all new. idk I think it's more what you get used to. I've used all mesh in my house and never had any problems
