Since they can’t properly digest it, some gardeners believe it can help reduce colony numbers over time. ☕ Coffee grounds around plants. Coffee grounds add organic matter to the soil and may improve soil structure. Some gardeners also swear they help deter pests, though results can be hit or miss. 🥚 A raw egg in a cup to deter deer. As the egg breaks down, it gives off a sulfur smell that deer find unpleasant. It’s basically a homemade version of some commercial deer repellents. 🧼 Rub a bar of soap under your fingernails before weeding. This one’s simple but brilliant. The soap fills the space under your nails so dirt can’t pack in while you’re working in the garden. 🫘 A zinc tablet in green beans when canning Some home canners add zinc-containing tablets because they believe it helps beans retain their color.
