@mind_yourboundaries: What would your husband do if his sister not only crossed a huge boundary but also BROKE THE LAW and does the context matter? Say his sister did that and she’s the solo earner for her family, then would he cave? Or let’s say his sister has a child who needs specialized treatments and that insurance is gone now that she lost her job would he lie then? For me, I can say with ten toes down that no matter what, if one of Ryan sisters did this, he would not lie for them because in the bigger picture, the sister needs to learn that actions have consequences. He stood by you, now you need to stand by him. If he doesn’t want to reach out to his family, you should respect that decision.

Everyone working in healthcare knows of HIPPA guidelines and it’s punishment of fines or jail. We actually take test and sign statements acknowledging these FEDERAL guidelines.

Even if he had done that it would not have mattered. It would have to be the patient herself that grants the permission AND it has to be in writing. HIPAA laws are very strict about this.

You husband can not give permission for the release of his wife’s medical records. Even if he gave his sister permission to view his minor child’s records, it would have to have been in writing then presented to medical records and someone else at hospital give her the records. I worked in medical records and they have rules.

Doesnt matter if he asked her or not, she legally isnt supposed to, as it is a HIPPA violation. Most hospitals have a tracking which logs who enters a chart and you have to document a reason. Or at least my hodpital does.

Honestly, it wouldn’t matter. She cannot review the records per someone’s request.

HIPAA is federal and the hospital can be fined for the violation. This is completely on the sister and it's called "consequences of my own actions".

Wouldn’t matter even if he did ask her to look into his medical record. She would still be fired for a HIPPA violation. He honestly can’t give her permission to he has to sign a medical release and it would never be released to his sister.

It doesn’t matter if she wanted the sil to look at the records. You still can’t look up records without actively being part of that patients care. I can’t even look up my own records. I would have to go through the same channels as everyone else to get them.
