MAKARA (2026 – Proscenium Theater) Makara is a very Filipino musical retelling of the Greek myth of Medusa. I wanna start with the songs—they’re all great. I had never heard any of them before, yet they somehow felt familiar in a comforting way. My only criticism is that there might be a few too many songs. It feels like almost every beat of the story has a musical number. At one point, I even caught myself thinking, “na naman?” But then, the song is yet again beautiful, and then all is forgiven. The performances were incredible too. These songs demand powerhouse vocals, and the production brought in a powerhouse cast that absolutely brought it. When it’s not being a musical, it’s also a tragic love triangle with a gorgon. In that sense, it feels very Pinoy too. Part of me found it amusing—and maybe even a little frustrating—that so many Filipino stories still find their way back to infidelity and complicated romances. It’s practically one of our national storytelling traditions at this point. The show runs for more than three hours, but I was entertained the entire time. I genuinely wanted to know what would happen to Makara. More importantly, I kept waiting for her to step back into the spotlight and set the stage ablaze with another devastating vocal performance. And in a show that long, they actually delivered exactly that. And then some. Go watch Makara at the Proscenium Theater. I loved every second of it, and I highly recommend it. If you’re a fan of musicals, great singing, and big emotions, I’m pretty sure you’re going to love it too. 6/7 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
