@moments.in.time0: POV: YOU ARE RICH IN NEW YORK IN 1900 New York in 1900 was already crowded, noisy, and exhausting. But if you were wealthy enough, other people absorbed most of that inconvenience for you. A large Fifth Avenue household might employ a valet, butler, footmen, maids, cooks, coachmen, and stable workers. Before you woke, servants had already prepared your clothes, drawn your bath, organized breakfast, and arranged your carriage. Your money could also generate more money without requiring your presence. While most New Yorkers worked long hours in factories, workshops, shops, and tenement apartments, wealthy investors could receive news that their railway or industrial shares had risen overnight. Your name mattered everywhere. Prestigious merchants could place purchases directly onto your account. Delmonico’s remembered its regular elite customers. Private clubs provided spaces where powerful men discussed finance, politics, and labour disputes over drinks. Even leisure became a public display of status. Wealthy families paraded their carriages through Central Park, walked through the Waldorf-Astoria’s Peacock Alley to see and be seen, and watched performances from private boxes at the Metropolitan Opera House. New York’s richest and poorest residents often lived only a few miles apart, but they experienced completely different cities. Would you enjoy this life, knowing how many people had to work to maintain it? #History #pov #newyork #newyorkhistory #gildedage
