sociology says otherwise. yes, at a certain age we do become more aware of our consequences and how they impact our surroundings, but every one of us is a product of their environment, meaning, yes some things are personal choices but at the same time we are all influenced by external forces whether they are macro (social institutions) or micro (interpersonal relationships). this is called sociological imagination and it’s a crucial way to understand why people do what they do. i truly understand where you come from because at a certain point in our life, some of us will be illuminated with what is going wrong in however we live (the choices we make, how we treat our surroundings, etc), but the truth is that many people lack that vision entirely due to their surroundings and also because how they were socialized. socialization is also very important in sociology, it’s essentially the lifelong process through which individuals learn norms and values in society. anyway, this whole tangent is to say that yes you do have a point, but this statement is way to general-it cannot apply to everybody. the world is not black and white. if we were to think this way, we would be shifting the blame of a corrupt society on individuals who truly did not have the choice to turn out like they did. everything is a personal choice, but unfortunately, not everyone has that “vision”. it’s good to take accountability, however, the key to a harmonious society would ideally be to be investing more empathy towards our surroundings to be able to better understand each other without blame (ik u didn’t mention blame but it is accompanied with accountability). this concept of empathy, “verstehen”, comes from the sociologist max weber. he thought of it while witnessing capitalism and “human machines”. his thoughts process suggested that if people cared more about these workers, then they would simply have better working conditions. Seems extremely logical like 1+1, but unfortunately, we lack this thought process in our everyday lives. Ironically, we could blame the system designed in a “one man for themselves” way. yeah that’s it holy yap i promise im employed and have things to do
